Just One Step Away

At the point of your breakthrough it can seem you are miles away when in reality you are only one step from victory. Our tendency is to believe that the most difficult step towards breakthrough is our first; however, in many cases it is that final step of faith that is most difficult. This is the place where the enemy will turn up the heat and intensify the pressure. It is the place where the doubt that has laid dormant in your life now begins to surface. It is the place where the enemy would desire that you feel vulnerable and isolated and sweet success becomes tainted and soured by the deceitful onslaught of the enemy.

You are almost there, you can see the finish line, you’re just one step away. Don’t let your breakthrough fade into the distance. Take that final bold step of faith and experience the joy that comes to those who dare to believe that all things are possible. Dare to believe that your crisis is over and your trouble is crushed by the power of the Holy Spirit. You are the over comer that Christ intended you to be according to His Word. Breakthrough no longer awaits you, it is yours!

Resolute in 2011

What have you determined to be resolute in your life for 2011…? According to one website, the top 10 new year’s resolutions are: 10) reduce stress; 9) spend more time with family; 8) perform some volunteer community service; 7) get more education; 6) find the love of one’s life; 5) get organized; 4) lose weight; 3) save money; 2) get fit: and 1) stop smoking or drinking. While these are indeed worthy resolutions for the New Year, you will notice that they are all focused on temporary gains rather than things eternal.

In addition to those typical resolutions like the ones listed above, can I challenge you to make some changes that will have great spiritual impact on your life and perhaps those around you. Some thoughts to consider… 10) invite a neighbor, friend or coworker to a church event this year; 9) live out a life of gratitude; 8) commit to practice an act of kindness everyday; 7) be faithful with tithes and offerings; 6) make equipping class and worship attendance a true priority for your life and for your family; 5) get involved in a ministry outside of Sunday morning worship; 4) find a ministry in which you can serve others 3) take a moment to pray every day; 2) read a portion of scripture every day; and 1) share the gospel with at least one person this year. If we desire to see significant spiritual changes in the lives of those around us we must first be willing to make significant spiritual changes in our own life.

“Memories That Last a Lifetime”

I remember as a child something my mother told me when my grandfather passed away and I reflect on it even today. “It’s not good bye, it’s I’ll see you later.” But what do I do in the mean time, I cherish the memories. I was ten years old when my grandfather passed away but I still cherish the memories. He bought my first ball glove that now sits on the shelf in my office. He was at every little league ball game I ever played. He always parked his car in right field and sat in a lawn chair until I got up to bat and then would step to the edge of the fence just in case I hit a home run to right field. He always waited for me to visit with him after the game and would encouraged me win or lose. We had season tickets to every home basketball game where we sat mid court so that he was in ear shot of the officials. He drank cream in his coffee and cornbread in his buttermilk. We played together, mowed lawns together, laughed together and loved greatly. As we remember our loved ones that have passed on, I encourage you to cherish the memories they truly last a lifetime.

"Are You Sill In Love"

I have recently been struggling with the trends I am seeing in the church today. It is not about the music, or styles, or preaching styles or even every new thing coming down the pike. What I struggle with is what seems to be a total disregard to a simple but powerful spiritual dynamic called faithfulness.

I tend to be a bit of statistical guy so I often have the tendency to look at data verses seeking the face of God as I know I should. I realize how unspiritual that sounds but it is simply who I am and I, like many of you eventually get back to the right place for the right answers.

In getting to the right place to get the right answers I find myself seeking the face of God. In fact the sense of heaviness and burden overwhelms me even as I write this blog today.

Perhaps our first thought is a simple one; people are simply not committed in this generation. The truth is that we are committed to doing and going to whatever we want to. We find the time and the resources to do what is most important us, or what we love.

2 Timothy 4:10 "Demas has left me because he loves the things of this life"...(NLT) Demas left the ministry and the things of God because his love for the things of this life were greater than his love God.

So my conclusion is that it is not about a lack of commitment, it is that we know longer have a love for Christ or the church that He died for. Revelations 2:4 "you don't love me or each other as you did at first"... (NLT)

I am praying that a renewed love for Christ will be stirred up within each of us. A love that will be stronger than any love we have for the things of this life, and as a result, we will again become faithful stewards of the promises of God.

If we are to be found faithful, it will be because we have a genuine love for God!!!

A Thankful Thought

Colossians 3:15 And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful. (NLT)

Thanksgiving is a day that reminds us that gratitude is a condition of the heart. Therefore, gratitude becomes a choice we make regardless of our current circumstance or condition. It is not necessarily a response to anything special that happens in our lives; rather it is a lifestyle that we are called to live. The bible says "Be Ye Thankful".

Regardless of what we have, or what we may not have, or even in spite of what we may have lost, we should pause at least for a moment during this festive celebration to affirm that what we have is "enough". So long as we have a relationship with Christ we certainly have more than enough because He is the God of plenty.

I challenge you today to ponder the many blessings of the Lord in your life, and don't allow the attitude of gratitude to hinge on a moment or even a day, but let thankfulness be a lifestyle lived in the grace and mercy of Christ Jesus.

Giving...It's not all about Money

Giving appears on the surface to be sharing possessions, wealth, income, and the like. More important, giving is sharing self. Giving is a most remarkable concept, originating in the heart of a giving God, a God who pours forth more blessings on his people than we can ever deserve or expect. The gift of life, the gift of love, the gift of salvation, the gift of eternity in heaven---all of these are priceless. The possessions we have are generally a tangible result of what we have invested in time and energy and talent. But who we are---our character---is always a direct result of what we have invested of ourselves with God and others. And one of the great and unique promises of the Bible is that the more we give, the more we receive---not necessarily in material possessions, but in spiritual and eternal rewards.

Why should we give?

Malachi 3:10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do…I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Let me prove it to you! We should give because God commands it. While we should never give just to get something in return (for that violates giving as an act of love.), god does promise bountiful blessing for those who obey this command.

Two principles are expressed in this passage. First of all, giving is actually an expression of love---we give because we love. Second, you can’t out give God! The more you give to Him, the more blessing you will receive. We give because we love someone and want to share ourselves and what we have. The dynamic that follows is that the object of our love---God, in this case---will respond to our giving with even more giving in return. So the contest has begun. Two people who love each other are joyfully trying to out give one another. Try this principle in your relationships---marriage, parenthood, friendships---and see how those relationships are revolutionized. Most important, try it with God.

"Quitting Is Not An Option"

If you know me at all you know that I am very competitive by nature. Regardless of the task I am determined to not only hold out to the end, but I strive to win and "Quitting is not an Option". My recent lifestyle change (diet and exercise) has caused me to get that statement not only in my mind but also in my spirit.

It is unfortunate that we often confuse I'll try, with I am determined. Don't confuse the two, there is a huge difference between those two thoughts and some times with grave consequences. If you are to experience success in any area of life you must determine "Quitting is not an Option".

Every area of life will be faced with some element of adversity and at times even conflict, but we must determine "Quitting is not an Option".

Adversity may come:

In a spiritual dynamic
In our emotions
In our finances
In our relationships
In our families

However, "Quitting is not an Option"...

Philippians 3:14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (NKJV)

As difficult as it may be, there are times we must establish the mark and simply press on!!!

"The Next Generation"

The next generation is going to face a new world, it's up to us to equip them to live out and defend a vibrant Christian faith.

C.S. Lewis once said, "The sources of unbelief among young people today do not lie in those young people...This very obvious fact is that each generation is taught by an earlier generation. Nothing which is not in the teachers can flow from them to the pupil."

May I suggest we protect our children from hostile worldviews by identifying the questions they are asking and the ideas being pushed on them in popular culture. The work starts in the home and extends to the local church. May I further suggest that the church is and should be an extension of the ministry of the home.

We can help our children address the difficult cultural issues by teaching them how to apply relevant biblical principles to any given situation.

"Christian Responsibility"

Today after a long election season it has come to a close with Barak Obama as the new President of the United States. There are some who have a sense of defeat while others are exuberant and victorious. The truth of the matter is, if you are a child of God then you are victorious according to the Word of God. We must not allow the circumstances of life, nor the election of any political figure, rob us of the joy that comes from knowing Christ.

Regardless of your political persuasion as a believer we have the obligation to pray for this great country and its leadership.

I Timothy 2:1-4 I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. As you make your requests, plead for God’s mercy upon them, and give thanks. Pray this way for kings and all others who are in authority, so that we can live in peace and quietness, in godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior, for he wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. (NLT)

Finally I think we should keep this in mind. I received this at the beginning of 2008, and it has surfaced again in response to the election results.

1. The Bible will still have all the answers
2. Prayer will still work
3. The Holy Spirit will still move
4. God will still inhabit the praises of His people
5. There will still be God - anointed preaching
6. There will still be singing of praises
7. There will still be room at the Cross
8. God will still pour out blessings upon His people
9. Jesus still loves you
10. Jesus will still save the lost (Rick Shuster)

Keep in mind that it is not nearly as important who is in the White House as it is with what is taking place in your house.

ARE YOU ON OVERLOAD

I ran across an article that I think might be helpful to all of us who tend to run on overload. I regret to say that I have been there in all too many of the statements, both in my personal life and in ministry (that is if you can separate the two). Please know that I am reminding myself as well as you that stewardship is more than being faithful in your finances, it is also living a well balanced life in references to our time, relationships and family.

“People seldom do what they believe in. They do what is convenient, then repent.” Bob Dylan

Faith propels us to love like Christ. We serve within our churches. We volunteer for charitable organizations. We commit to helping loved ones. These are fruits of our faith. But, occasionally, we find ourselves taking on too much. We’re afraid to say no out of guilt and obligation. Truth is, there are times when we need to pass. It may be time to take a time-out if:

You’re spending less time with the Father. For your faith to blossom, you need quality time with God, time spent in prayer, study, reflection, worship. If you’re crowding out that time, you’re too busy

You’re neglecting your family and loved ones. It may sound impossible, but before you know it, your service activities can take you away from those closest to you, and that’s not a place you want to be.

You’re physically, mentally, and emotionally drained. How much good can you do for others when you’re exhausted? Not much. Remember that you need rest and down time, and that’s not a bad thing, it’s a must.

The joy is gone. If you find yourself felling no joy and satisfaction in the works of your faith, you may be suffering from overload.

Sometimes it is as simple as a refocusing of our perspectives to readjust our load. However, there may be times that we need a spiritual overhaul which can only happen when you spend time with the Father. Even Jesus knew the important lesson of getting alone with the Father to refresh His life physically, spiritually and emotionally.

Perilous Times!!!

Needless to say there is a great deal of concern in our country over the recent developments surrounding our economy. I wonder if anyone has given it a thought that maybe God is trying to get our attention once again.

As I look back over the past several years I can see the hand of God at work, desperately trying to get the attention of America. With each unfolding event we look to God to bail us out of our trouble rather than call on him to rescue our troubled soul.

Wake up America…

From the devastation of 911 to the recent crash of the stock market, from hurricanes to tornadoes that have ravaged our coast lines and destroyed our country side, earthquakes, tsunamis, wars and rumors of wars. Yes, I believe the earth is groaning preparing to give up its dead at the rapture of the church.

Matthew 24:4 And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you.5 “For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.6 “And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.7 “For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.8 “All these are the beginning of sorrows.

Paul spoke to Timothy concerning the last days and called them perilous or difficult times…,

2 Timothy 3:1-5 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good,4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!

So what is the believer to do in such times? We pray according the Word of the Lord reflected in Revelation 22, praying even so Lord come quickly.

Priority!!!

This morning I rode my motorcycle into work and thought how wonderful it would be to be riding in the cool mountain air of New Mexico or Colorado. While living in Kansas Connie and I enjoyed several wonderful trips to the mountains of New Mexico. As I thought about the wonderful times we enjoyed I couldn’t help but think of the cool mornings sitting around the fire with a hot cup of coffee and marveling at the beauty and tranquility of our surroundings.

I have come to realize, that the greatest times in life are not about the successes in business, the completion of a great project, or finishing first at whatever you plan to accomplish. The greatest times in life are times spent with the people you love and care about the most. It seems the older I get the more I have learned to put what is essential into greater perspective.

I have also discovered that time spent with family doesn’t always come easy. With everything that bids for our time it is easy to neglect what should be priority. For those of you who are like I am and seem to live and die by the events of your calendar or planner, I have this piece of advice for you. (Schedule it today!!!) put it on your calendar or planner, mark it priority and don’t let the excuse of the lack of funds cause you to cancel it. Time spent with the people you love the most does not have to cost you a great deal of money. However, what it will cost you if you don’t make the investment is regret.

What's Essential?

In light of the recent events that continue to unfold in the political arena it is important that we maintain our focus on the essentials of reaching the lost. I have been preaching a message series entitled “Let’s get to the Core”. These messages deal with the core essentials of ministry for Bethel Assembly of God both in and outside the church. As I have stated on many occasions “What is happening in the White House is not nearly as important as what is happening in your house”.

I like many others who have strong conservative values have a great deal of interest in the VP selection of John McCain. From the information I have been able to gather Sarah Palin share many of those same values. I have also listened to the media that is trying to take to task some of the doctrinal beliefs that she grew up with in an Assembly of God Church.

Just to set the record straight for the main stream media …

We do believe that Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation

We do believe that when you pray God provides direction for our lives as we seek His direction

We do believe that praying for our National, State, and Local leadership makes a difference

We do believe that praying a hedge of protection over the troops that serve this great country can and will change the circumstances of our troops in harms way

We do believe in the Baptism of Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance. However, tongues are not the primary purpose of this baptism, the power to witness is! (a core essential which enables us to reach the lost according to Acts 1:8)

We do believe in the rapture of the church (The Blessed Hope).

These were the many questions and statements demined and belittled on MSNBC and CNN news on Monday evening.

I simply want to remind all of my readers to stay the course, stay focused and keep in mind what is truly essential. Regardless of your political persuasion there are people all around us that need Christ. Be a witness, share your faith, and don’t loose your focus.

"Living Within the Boundaries"

I just had the privilege of spending several days with my family out in West Texas. We had a wonderful time but as always it was great to sleep in my own bed in spite of the threat of severe weather from hurricane Gustav. By all indications Gustav did not impact our state to the degree at which it was predicted to do so. (Praise the Lord!)

While in Andrews it was truly enjoyable to go to church with all of my family. What a great message preached by Pastor on sexual immorality and the moral decline of our nation.

He shared an illustration that I certainly thought was worth repeating. He likened healthy sexual relations in the confines of marriage between one man and one woman to that of a flowing river. So long as the river stays within in its banks it provides health and life to all who partake. However, let that same river get outside of its banks (boundaries) and it becomes destructive.

God’s Word always provides healthy boundaries for us to flow within. However, when we choose to live outside of the boundaries provided for the believer it becomes destructive not only to our lives but also to the lives of those around us. This principal is not only true in the area of sexual immorality but in every area of our spiritual lives. Live within the boundaries of God’s Word and enjoy abundant life. However, choose a path outside of those boundaries and destruction is inevitable.

John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.(NKJV)

"Hearing the Voice of God"

Greetings everyone, I am sure it has been so long since we had coffee that you’re having caffeine withdrawals.

We have started a new Wednesday night study on “Hearing, Knowing, and Discovering the voice of God”

We should keep in mind that the most common means by which God speaks to man kind is from His Word, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

However, there are many other voices in the world desperately trying to capture our attention.

First is the Voice of Man…

The voice of man is easy to recognize. It is the audible voice of another human being. While the voice of man may give wise advice, it is often times misguided and misdirected by our own human nature. As with any voice it must be put to the test. Does the voice align itself with the Word of God, or is it contrary to the Word of God.

The Voice of Satan…

The voice of satan lies, deceives, and always attempts to lead man into sin and away from God. His subtle attack will often times mix truth with lies in order to deceptively lead us astray. As with any voice it must be put to the test. Does the voice align itself with the Word of God, or is it contrary to the Word of God. Satan will never align with God’s Word.

The Voice of Self…

The voice of self can be detrimental to our walk of faith if we are not careful. I contend that of all the voices trying to capture our attention, this voice can often get us into trouble more quickly than any other voice. Unfortunately much of what we speak doesn’t align with the Word of God. I must learn to align my speech with His Word in order to effectively walk in transforming faith

The Voice of God…

This is the voice my ear and spirit must be in tune with. It is vital to my spiritual well being and growth that I develop a sensitive ear to His voice.

John 16:13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.(NLT)

"Compromise "

Joshua 24:15 …, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."(NKJV)

In our quest for understanding we have discovered that the Committed…

Freely chose the Lord to be their Lord
Wholeheartedly serve the Lord
Trust and obey the Word of the Lord

However, as certain as there are those who truly commit everything to the Lord, there will also be those who refuse commitment and compromise their faith and relationship for their own desires.

Joshua 23:11-12 Therefore take careful heed to yourselves, that you love the LORD your God. Or else, if indeed you do go back, and cling to the remnant of these nations--these that remain among you--and make marriages with them, and go in to them and they to you,(NKJV)

There are three aspects to understand regarding the one living a life of compromise…

They go through the same motions as the committed, but ultimately do not trust nor obey God
They are willing to disobey God for personal pleasures and possessions
They accept the values and lifestyle of the culture around them

It is what I conclude as second hand faith, (what someone else believes or has experienced).

While the person sitting in the place of compromise claims to believe the same truths as the person sitting in the seat of commitment, he or she will live a life that is nearly identical to the person whose life is in conflict and chaos.

As I have discussed in earlier blogs, “any time we compromise a committed relationship we have set ourselves up for conflict and chaos.”

We cannot live a committed life on second hand faith (what someone else believes or has experienced) we must have a personal encounter with Christ and establish that relationship on the principles of His Word.

Commitment

Commitment is the key to any successful relationship. Be it with Christ, a spouse a child or any relationship for that matter. While some run from commitment for fear of being tied or bound, I happen to believe it is to the contrary. Commitment brings tremendous liberty into every relationship and will help you overcome difficult circumstances and temptation so long as you remain committed.

My commitment to Christ enables me to overcome every attack of the enemy in my life. When the temptation comes to compromise in any area of life it is my commitment to Christ that brings me through. How that works, is I have made the decision to be faithful to Christ before the question to compromise every crosses my mind. I can’t wait until I am in the heat of the battle to decide what I will do when it comes to my commitment to Christ. That decision must be made long before I am faced with the decision to compromise my relationship.

The same is true in my relationship with my spouse. Connie and I have committed to one another in every area of our lives. I have settled it in my heart that outside of my relationship with Christ this is the most important relationship in my life. Therefore, I refuse to allow any area of compromise to derail it. I have already made the decision to be faithful and true to my spouse before any areas of compromise cross my path.

You can apply this principle to every area of your life in relationships. However, if you choose to compromise any committed relationship it will bring with it conflict and chaos.

Commitment, Compromise & Conflict III

Joshua 24:15 “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Early in Joshua's leadership he faced the very decision that every believer must face and resolve for themselves.

In Joshua 24:21-22 the very thing that Joshua had settled for himself must now be settled by those whom he had led. "that you have chosen the Lord for yourselves"

If we are to lead spiritually with any effectiveness or influence, (be it our family, or in some capacity in the body of Christ) we must be totally committed to the call and cause of Christ.

First, the Committed freely choose the Lord to be their Lord...

If you haven't settled it spiritually
If it's not settled deep in your soul
You will struggle to stay committed through difficult decisions, places of compromise or elements of conflict.

Secondly, the committed wholeheartedly serve the Lord...

Joshua not only saw the Lord as his Lord, but he saw himself as the Lord's servant. Therefore, as committed believers we must covenant ourselves with the Lord.

Thirdly, the committed trust and obey the Word of the Lord...

Joshua 1:8 “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Commitment, Compromise & Conflict II

If you listen to the news at all you can quickly discern the struggles we face as a Christian community.

Here are some things that caught my attention in the news from this past week…

Another teacher scandal of inappropriate relations with a minor
Yearning For Zion Ranch, a polygamist compound in West Texas is raided for sexual child abuse
Three third graders plot to harm or even kill their teacher after being disciplined for a wrong behavior
Two different fourteen year old girls in separate incidents try and dispose of their newly born child
and the list goes on

Realizing the mixed up world we now live in, I must ask my self the question. What can the church do to impact our culture and change our world?

I conclude that the church must draw the line in the sand and raise high the standard of holiness while loving people unconditionally. It has been said that to draw a hard line is a lack of compassion. I beg to differ with that opinion and to the contrary, to not draw the line at all is a lack of compassion.

With that being said, we can have a high standard of holiness, have a definitive line drawn in the sand as to sin and still love people. We must understand that loving people does not mean we have to compromise the Word of God or our standards. But, if all we do is establish the line and never point people to the cross or teach them to grow in God’s Word we are simply building a doctrine of legalism.

The answer to changing our culture and our world is not a legalistic doctrine based on a set of rules established by man. It is a Bible based foundation established for the purpose of changing peoples hearts.

Luke 4:18 "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;(NKJV)

Commitment, Compromise & Conflict

Welcome back to “Coffee With the Pastor”. It has been a while since our last coffee break so pour yourself a cup and relax. I am back on a schedule to write each week so you will receive the new weekly updates.

I have spent a great deal of time in prayer and study over the past several months regarding the state of the church and the family. My conclusion is that we have lost our way in both. The family is in dysfunction not because of the church, but in spite of the church. And the church is in dysfunction because of our inability to be committed in relationships. I am sure that sounds a bit harsh but church as usual is not going to change the conflict in our homes, or in our world.

I have just started a new series of messages for the family that starts with “Commitment” on behalf of every believer. Joshua 24:15 “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” The first key to any committed relationship be it with (Christ, your spouse, or your children) is me and not we. In other words every commitment starts with the individual voluntarily and willingly committing to that relationship. At any point in which that relationship is compromised it will eventually lead to conflict. Thus the series; “Commitment, Compromise and Conflict” and unfortunately many in the church today are in conflict rather than commitment.

The question is, how is your relationships?

I will be writing a great deal on this subject over the next few weeks with the intent that God’s Word will strengthen your commitments or bring you out of conflict.

All of God's Creation

It has been a while since my last posting and not everyone will be able to appreciate this one. However, those of you who enjoy the outdoors will totally understand where I am coming from.

First of all if you have never enjoyed a sunrise you have missed out on one of the many spectacular creations of our Heavenly Father. Secondly, there is nothing like sitting in the deer stand or the duck blind when the sun peaks over the horizon and all of creation comes alive.

I recently had the opportunity to enjoy a hunt in San Angelo, TX. with some wonderful friends from our church. I remember sitting in the blind the first morning of the hunt as the sun begin to break the horizon. Several deer were already out in front of me, the bobwhite quail were calling, and I could hear a turkey gobble in the distance.

As I listened to nature come alive I could not help but think, God created all I see and hear for my enjoyment. Contrary to what some may believe, hunting is about enjoying God’s creation and the wonderful friendships that are built from spending time around the camp or sitting in the blind. To have the opportunity to harvest a great buck like this one is all extra.

Take the opportunity to spend time with family, make new friends and enjoy all of God’s creation.

An Upward Source of Joy

The Presence or absence of joy in one’s life is determined primarily by the quality of one’s relationships. The ideal relationships, built on the proper perspective, can produce a sense of satisfaction and contentment.

God’s truth, when practiced will give us the ability to cope in the toughest set of circumstances. However, the scriptural approach to relationships is not a formula to rid us of all problems. It will help us however cope;

When it seems our faith is gone and God is nowhere to be found.
When we are psychologically battered, or spiritually bruised.
When feelings of failure overwhelm us like a flood.

This is not about perpetual happiness. But, as a child of God we can be sustained by a deep sense of satisfaction and contentment so long as we keep in prospective the proper order of relationships.

The primary source of joy comes through an upward source of one’s relationship with God. While it can take a life time to resolve strained relationships with people, it takes but a moment to reconcile your relationship with God.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.(NKJV)

The Joy of Relationship

I am of the opinion that everything in life evolves around our relationships.

Our Relationship with God
Our Relationship with others
Our relationship with self

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart...soul and...mind'; and 'Love your neighbor as (much as you love) yourself" (Luke 10:27)

Love God first and best. Sounds simple, but it is not always that simple to accomplish.

When we experience difficulties with others, or we battle low self-esteem, the temptation is to deal with the problem at the horizontal level (people) rather than immediately checking the vertical relationship (Christ).

We tend to believe that human problems always have human solutions. This is not necessarily true.

The answer to our dilemmas...

Is not the outward look (to others), or the inward look (to self), but the upward look (to God).

This simple truth has the opportunity to transform your life. A healthy relationship with Christ will produce the positive self image to which is the basis for all of your earthly relationships. How you see other people is most often determined by how you see yourself.

Affirming Your Children

Psalm 78:5-7 For he issued his laws to Jacob; he gave his instructions to Israel. He commanded our ancestors to teach them to their children, so the next generation might know them- even the children not yet born- and they in turn will teach their own children. So each generation should set its hope anew on God, not forgetting his glorious miracles and obeying his commands. (NLT)

The healthiest families I know are the ones in which the mother and father have a strong, loving relationship between themselves. This seems to flow over to the children and even beyond the home. The strong primary relationship seems to breed security in the children, and, in turn fosters the ability to take risk, to reach out to others, to search for their own answers, become independent, and develop a good self image. (Dolores Curran)

I am convinced that children will get their sense of worth & value from their parents. When you speak in a positive, prophetic manner into the lives of your children, the result will be incredible. You must affirm to your child what the Word has to say about who they are in Christ. Be assured they will not get this advice from the world, the school system, or any secular environment.

The final thought is to remember nothing will take the place of your example. Your character will speak louder than your words.

"Fair But Firm..."

Proverbs 19:18 Discipline your children while there is hope. If you don’t, you will ruin their lives.

Contrary to what some may believe teenagers not only need, but also desire a set of guidelines from parents.

My discipline philosophy is “fair but firm”. Not every situation calls for the same disciplinary action. Just remember while time out may work for a three year old, it will not work for a teenager. If you learn to understand how your teen thinks, it will help you to understand the most effective way to discipline.

While it is important to discipline at the moment of the behavior with a child, that is not necessarily the case with a teenager. It may be that you and your spouse need time to sit down privately and discuss the circumstances surrounding the issue. Then sit down with your teen and spell out or perhaps even write out the guidelines and the consequence for breaking the rule again.

In open dialog with your teen regarding the disciplinary action, ask your teen if they feel you are being fair, or what part of the disciplinary action is unfair or unrealistic (expect anything). If there are some areas you can adjust fine, if not, explain your reasoning for the firmness of your discipline. Perhaps you can talk to them about concessions in the foreseeable future if the guidelines you set are strictly adhered to.

Learn to be responsive rather than reactive…It will make your life more pleasant and lower your blood pressure! (Rayology 101)

Non-Negotiables of Raising Teens

Proverbs 19:18 Discipline your children while there is hope. If you don’t, you will ruin their lives.

Again allow me to start by saying; “the only way to provide successful instruction and meaningful discipline is to have open communication with your teen.”

I was given some good advice as my girls were growing up. “Allow your children to make as many decisions as possible with minimal input from you.” This will build character and confidence in your child’s life. However, there are some decisions you will make that are not up for debate or question.

Here are a few things I consider Non-Negotiables:

Church attendance is not optional: I don’t mean you take your teen to church, this means you go as a family.

When we first moved to Shreveport our youth group was rather small, as a result Heidi went through some struggles. The norm for her was 50-60 youth with live worship, multi media, full- time Youth Pastor. I researched some other AG youth groups in the area that she could attend on occasion and get involved with. Her spiritual well being was more important than my ego. If that meant we had to adjust for this dynamic in her life so be it. If you make this decision it is important that your teen stay connected to the youth in your church and the group they get involved with have the same doctrinal stand as you. This can be a tough balance but it can be done with great success. A good Youth Ministry can be a life line for your teen.

Family Time: You create it, everyone participates. Sounds simple but is sometimes quite difficult. However, it is vital to your relationship with your teen.
Respect: There is no quicker way to create a disrespectful teenager than to allow disrespect in the home.
Honesty: Tough area but critical. Open dialog will help, but your teen will still struggle in this area when they have broken the rules. Stay with it, lying is not only sin it also erodes trust.
Safety Issues: Physical safety issues are sometimes easier to deal with than spiritual. Last week I talked about respecting your’ teenagers space. However, you must be willing to monitor many activities that your teen is involved with. Movies, music, the internet, to name a few (view their my-space with them; ask questions it’s your right and responsibility as a parent.) Typically if they are keeping it pure they will not be bothered by your viewing it.

Good adults are created through proper training and discipline from loving parents. But remember, not every hill is worthy of a fight. (Author Unknown)

Negotiables of Raising Teens

I realize the subject matter I will discuss today is not only a hot button for many parents of teens but also for your teenager. I also know that you may not agree with my suggestions or even consider them, just remember they are merely suggestions.

Allow me to reiterate the thought from last week; “the only way to provide successful instruction and meaningful discipline is to have open communication with your teen.”

Raising children is the most rewarding and most challenging job you will ever face. Having a good grasp of what you feel is negotiable and what is non-negotiable will minimize stress and frustration with both your teen and your spouse.

First are things that can be negotiated:

Clothes—I am not suggesting, anything goes method, (sexually suggestive, issues of vulgarity would suggest concern) what I am saying is that style is probably not a mountain worth dying for. (Remember style may/probably will change in two weeks)

Music—I suggest you be more concerned with content than with style. In fact there is a great deal of good Christian alternative music for your teen. Be willing to research it with an open mind and offer it to your teenager.

Friends—The truth is you have less control over this area than you think. However, the more you know the better you will be. Encourage them to hang out at your house rather than places you feel uncomfortable with. Make every effort to meet their friend’s parents.

Bedroom—Teens need a place were they can have privacy but not seclusion. (My idea is that this area should also be kept clean, but that’s just my idea). Respect their space as much as possible while still parenting.

Relationships—I can only speak to raising teenage girls regarding relationships. While some conclude that dating for teens is out of the question that is not the view I hold. You as a parent have the opportunity to teach your child how to properly handle relationships in this venue. (I believe it is called parenting where you set the guidelines and they learn to respect them.) You can read my blog “Sweet Sixteen” to see what I have done with both my girls.

It is very likely you can add to this list. However, if you can effectively accomplish these tasks other issues will be handled with ease.

The Teenage Years

The question was recently ask of me how Connie and I have been successful at raising two beautiful daughters who love God, honor their parents, and respect other adults in authority? (Remember you have seen our girls at their best, and while they are truly wonderful girls, like every child they have had their moments.)

“Keep in mind that more battles are won through diplomacy than through combat. Set rules for your teenager, and spell out consequences in advance. That way, when rules are broken, your discipline is rooted in enforcement of standing rules, not angry outburst.” (Quote from Life Magazine)

First of all the greatest tool for parenting is to have great dialog with your kids. Nothing will ever take the place of communication. You must be willing to talk with your children about everything under the sun. Without open communication you will never be able to successfully give instruction or provide meaningful discipline.

Providing an atmosphere where your child can talk to you openly is critical. This has been an area of great success for us. Your willingness to not only speak into their lives, but also listen to their concerns gives them the freedom to express themselves through every situation.

"Life Style Evangelism"

I believe the greatest way to share your faith is not always what you say but how you live. People who feel hopeless are not nearly as impressed with our speaking as they are our living.

Our greatest ability to witness is through what I call "Life Style Evangelism". I truly believe it is perhaps the greatest witnessing tool at our disposal. However, while it is a great tool to win the lost, it can also be destructive if our walk doesn’t match our talk.

Here are some simple ways to share your faith…

Smile more than you frown

Laugh more than you cry

Encourage rather than discourage

Build up rather than tear down

A kind word rather a harsh response

You may say that’s too simple, yet they all demonstrate the love of Christ. Christ never intended for the ministry of witnessing to be complicated. Acts 1:8 “you shall be witnesses unto me”. Our Lord doesn’t need an attorney he simply needs some witnesses... How's your witness?

Balance, Not Perfection...

Early in Ministry I concluded in my own mind that everything I did had to be perfect. The struggle of trying to do and accomplish perfection in ministry left me out of balance and often times out of touch. I wasted a great deal of time and energy on things that had no eternal consequence.

Discovering the difference between excellence and perfection has left me liberated and brought my ministry and family into balance. While I still conclude that ministry should be done in a par excellent manner, it does not necessarily mean that everything has to be perfect.

I can hear some of you who worked with me during my earlier years of ministry laughing as you read this blog. You are almost certain you have opened the wrong site.

Here’s the key; If you prioritize by purpose you will naturally find balance.

What’s my motivation? Is it guilt, or God?
What’s my first place of ministry? (My Family)
Does it have eternal consequence?
Is it worthwhile for the time and energy it will require?
Is it something I will enjoy?

Make choices based on how God designed you and not on what others think and want.

Nurturing A Critical Thinker

I recently read an article that caught my attention and felt it was worth passing on. So I share with you today the article in part by Michael Ross along with some of my own discoveries with “nurturing a critical thinker.

Good Kid’s, Bad Choices? Every day your children are forced to make hundreds of split second choices and decisions that can blow up in their faces and change their lives forever, or even end them.

The sad thing is that many Christian Parents have not armed their kids with critical thinking skills. Unfortunately for many of our children, when the pressure’s on, values and common sense often fly out the window.

As Christian parents it is our responsibility to not only teach our children what we believe, but also why we believe it. Allow your child to respectfully ask why when it comes to biblical truths. Your goal is to engage their minds and to connect them to the whys behind truth.

Remember, critical thinkers are taught, not born. As you foster a critical thinker communicate these key messages:

Don’t buy a lie; Colossians 2:8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.
Pray often and Pray Hard; Encourage your children to pray about everything.
Measure everything against the Bible; God’s word is timeless and absolutely, positively accurate about everything essential for our well being.

Sweet Sixteen

August 21, 1991 what an incredible day. Sixteen years ago our youngest daughter Heidi was born. What a bundle of joy, full of energy, ready to take on the world. A bit different from the meek personality of our oldest daughter Savannah. Regardless of personality differences both are beautiful red heads with a passion to love and serve Christ.

I took Heidi out on her first date as I did with Savannah on her sixteenth. Complete with roses, special gifts, fine dining and a covenant between us sealed with a diamond ring. Not only do I count it a privilege for my girls to experience their first real date with dad, but I also view it as my responsibility to show them how they should expect to be treated on every date. (Not being lavished with gifts but given respect and honor.)

It has been a lifetime of learning as my girls have watched my every move. How I live my life, how I treat my wife, how I pray, praise and preach my Lord. I believe their reflection of who Christ is becomes a direct reflection of my relation with them, their mom, and more importantly Jesus Christ. I am certain there are many times I have fallen short of their expectations, yet I can say with confidence I have given my very best.

"No Greater Love"

John 15:9-13
“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.10 “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.11 “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.12 “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.13 “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends."

There is nothing that will ever compare to the love of Jesus. His greatest expression of love towards us, is that He gave His life to cover our sin. The question I am often asked, is how can I express my love for Christ?

1) First is to surrender your life completely over to Him.

2) Communication is key to any successful, healthy relationship. Therefore, learn to communicate with Him through prayer and allow Him to speak into your life through His Word (The Bible). You can express your love for Him not only through prayer but also through the power of praise and worship. The verbal expression of love will have a tremendous impact on your relationship with Christ.

3) Live a committed life to Him and share your faith with others.

I challenge you today to express your love for Christ through surrender, communication and a committed life to Him.

Eternal Investments

Connie, Heidi and I just spent a wonderful week with Kellen, Savannah and Titan at their home in Kansas. It was our first opportunity to be in a Sunday morning service where Kellen and Savannah serve as Youth Pastors. It was refreshing to be able to sit in a service and enjoy great ministry from the worship to the preaching of the Word.

Simple thoughts…

There is no greater feeling than to enjoy the success of your children.
If I had known grandchildren were so much fun I would have done that first.
Don’t miss a single opportunity to love on your kids, it’s a lifetime investment that will produce a great harvest.

You Can Overcome!

Life is full of obstacles that often become road blocks if we take a wrong approach. So the question is not if I will face obstacles, but when and what will be my approach to overcome them. At every obstacle I make a decision..."I Will Overcome".

1) Matthew 17:20 faith the size of a mustard seed can move the mountain...I conclude it is not the size of the mountain, or the size of the faith, but where your faith is directed that make the difference.

2) Keep a right spirit and attitude regardless the size of the obstacle...

3) Assess the mountain (obstacle, situation, circumstance)... you can go over it, you can go around it, or you can go through it. Every approach will produce the same result if you stay with it. "You Will Overcome"

Every Day Is A Great Day!

I have discovered that every day is what you make of it. You can choose to see the sunrise and enjoy the blessings that each new day brings or regret the difficult task that awaits you. However, regret will not change the task nor will it help to accomplish it. What will help is to know "this is the day that the Lord has made and I will rejoice in it".

Three simple thoughts...

1) Start your day with good morning Lord (He is the giver of life)

2) Enjoy your family (life is too short to allow conflict to destroy your family)

3) Encourage a friend (relationships are the only thing that last forever)

I have been blessed with a great family, wonderful friends a loving God that will see me through each day!
